Paragon Tech - The Grill-Wok Combo
If your grill doesn't have a wok, you're missing out.
I love cooking, and I especially love a good fried rice. I spent around 4 years working in Asian restaurants in my teen years, and I've used massive woks to make huge batches of fried rice at a time. I've never been able to make as good of rice at home, and all of my stir frys end up soggy. It comes down to heat. Commercial wok burners can be 50-100k BTUs, which is a lot! Normal stovetops can't match this, especially on the rounded bottom surface of a wok.
I recently got an outdoor propane wok burner and wok. It's exactly what I wanted. High heat, high capacity, and really good fried rice. The only problem I had was that the wok burner has its own stand that puts it at about 2' off the ground. Placing it on other surfaces can be tricky or dangerous. It also needs its own propane tank. Every time I cooked with the wok, I would have to drag the burner and propane tank out from the garage.
And then it happened. I used 100% of my brain. My gas grill has its own propane tank, and the grill has wheels. I've never once used the stove burner on the side of the grill, so it can be removed. All I would need to do is mount the wok to the grill and plumb the propane connections.
I ended up drilling a few holes in the side panel and using some pieces of angle iron to provide a place to attach the wok burner. I made sure to keep the angle iron mount as long as possible, to distribute the weight of the wok burner.
The plan worked out great. The wok is at a great working height (woking height?) and uses the same propane tank as the grill. It fits nicely under the grill cover as well.
I've cooked dozens of meals on this wok and grill setup now. I've yet to cook anything that requires both. Maybe someday we'll see commercial grills with this option.
Thanks for checking this out!
